BOCS Supports Sidewalk on Kettle Run Road

Brentsville District Supervisor Wally Covington announced that a planned sidewalk along Kettle Run Road has been green-lit by the Board of County Supervisors.

According to Covington, the intersection at Kettle Run, Sudley Manor and Vint Hill is not pedestrian friendly.

"The sidewalk along the westbound side of Kettle Run, frankly, should have been constructed when T. Clay Wood Elementary and Patriot High schools were built," Covington said.  "In fact, the Planning Commission tried to require the School Board to roll the costs of constructing the sidewalk into the plans for Patriot, but the school division didn’t follow through."

Citing the number of communities directly across Vint Hill Road, county officials realized that students of Patriot High School would traverse Kettle Run to travel to and from the school.

"I am proud to say that our county transportation department identified funds, matched some Brentsville TRIP money and with the Victory Crossing Church rezoning and their donation of right-of-way to the project, we were able to acquire enough resources to build the sidewalk along Kettle Run," he said.

Covington admits that the sidewalk will not solve all the issues; however, he hopes the project will ultimately make the corridor safer for students.

"I also want to remind folks in the area based upon the Glenkirk sidewalk project, the Kettle Run sidewalk includes federal money and due to that fact, may take longer to complete than we would normally estimate," he said.

County planners expect the project to be completed by fall 2015.
