Bristow Stable Owners Charged with 57 Counts of Animal Cruelty

Following a tip from a concerned citizen, Animal Control Officers from the Police Department’s Animal Control Bureau inspected the Cross States Stable. They arrested Larry Dale Sams, 58,  and his daughter Carolyn Mae Sams, 32, of Bristow on a combined 57 counts of animal cruelty.

"The citizen reported numerous animals that appeared to be emaciated and in need of medical care," police spokesperson Officer Ericca K. Figueroa said.

Animal Control Officers, accompanied by a veterinarian, inspected the property, located at 12108 Nokesville Road in Bristow,  April 14.

"Officers observed numerous animals in poor condition," Figueroa said. "Some of the animals were clearly in need of medical care. In addition, there appeared to be inadequate food and water available for animals."

Officers also found improperly disposed of animal carcasses.

Figueroa described the condition of the facility as deplorable.

"The stalls were found covered with animal feces and water containers were not properly cleaned," she said. "A total of 17 horses, 19 sheep, 6 goats, 2 donkeys, 1 cow, 27 rabbits, 4 dogs, 1 llama and approximately 50 poultry, in various cages, were found on the property."

As a result of what they found on the property, Animal Control Officers executed a search warrant and removed 59 animals from the property, including, 28 rabbits, 18 sheep, 6 goats, 4 dogs, 2 horses and 1 bull calf. 

Officers euthanized some small animals due to their poor health. Animal Control staff are caring for the remaining animals.

The suspects were arrested April 30 without incident.

Police charged Larry Dale Sams with 57 counts of animal cruelty; he is held without bond. His court date is June 3. Carolyn Mae Sams was charged with one count of animal cruelty. Her court date is June 3.

Larry Sams was convicted in 2012 and 2013 on misdemeanor charges of inadequate care for agricultural animals.
