W.S. Wally Covington III, Vice Chairman of Prince William County Board of Supervisors was confirmed as a Prince William County General District Court Judge by the Virginia General Assembly Thursday.

According to Virginia law, Covington will have to resign his county supervisor position.

County Republicans will hold a nominating meeting at Patriot High School Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.to choose their candidate who will run in a special election to fill Covington's seat.

According to the Prince William Democrat Committee, they will not run a Democratic candidate for the position; instead they will focus on other races where they feel they will have a better chance of winning.

“I’d like to congratulate Supervisor Covington on his judicial appointment," Republican candidate for Brentsville Supervisor Jeanine Lawson said in a statement. "I look forward to having the opportunity to represent the residents of the Brentsville District and my campaign is in position to run a strong race in the upcoming election. I will continue to share my plans for balanced growth, responsible spending and quality of life issues with the voters of the Brentsville District."

Local realtor Republican Scott Jacobs is also seeking the vacant seat. He provided this statement to Bristow Beat.

"I would like to extend a very heart felt congratulations to Wally Covington, his family and staff. Mr. Covington will make a wonderful addition to the bench here in Prince William County. I would like to thank him for his many years of leadership, advice and hard work. I welcome the opportunity to pick up where he left off so that I might carry the torch as he has for many years to come. There is a lot more to be accomplished in the Brentsville District and I promise if elected to work hard to build A STRONGER PRINCE WILLIAM," Jacobs said. Potomac Local reported that when Covington vacates his position, it may be a while before a replacement can step into the position even temporarily. This is due to a unique Prince William County law. Read more here
