The National Weather Service has issued an overnight Frost Advisory for the Northern Virginia area. Temperatures are expected to drop to the low to mid 30s.

The NWS warns that plants that are sensitive to freezing temperatures will be at serious risk for damage.

Chris Omohundro, Master Gardener for Prince William County, suggests covering any delicate plants, including annuals, vegetable gardens and bulbs.

“It’s more than frost; it’s cold,” Omohundro said. “Protect the plants by covering them with sheets, towels or cardboard.”

While new growth is especially at risk, some plants are hardy enough to weather the cold.

“Don’t worry about cherry and dogwood trees,” he said. “They’ll be fine.”

The Frost Advisory remains in effect from 2 a.m until 10 a.m.
