Gainesville Publisher Produces Comic Book that Addresses Suicide

Comics books are typically known for riveting action-adventure stories with larger-than-life heroes and maniacal villains; however, local publisher Azure Multimedia, Inc. used the medium for a decidedly different purpose, to help raise awareness of suicide.

The Gainesville-based publisher launched "Dream Runner" last weekend at the Baltimore Comic- Con.

The series, "a story of death, intrigue and the blurred lines between dreaming and reality," also features a main character who is dealing with the loss of his best friend who recently committed suicide.

“This book has been 20 years in the making and focuses on two guiding principles that he lives by: hope and perseverance," said Thomas Chillemi, president of Azure and the writer of the comic.

Chillemi planned the release of "Dream Runner" to coincide with National Suicide Prevention Week from Sept. 8 to Sept. 14. Furthermore, a  portion of the sales of each issue of "Dream Runner #1" will be donated to Lifeline, a non-profit organization based in New York City.

Residents can purchase "Dream Runner #1" locally at Comics & Gaming, which is located at 7556 Gardner Park Drive in Gainesville.

"If you or someone you know is in Crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255)," Chillemi said.
