Hazmat Responds to Substance Spill at Virginia Gateway

Posted

Reports of an unknown substance in the roadway at the Virginia Gateway Shopping Center in Gainesville prompted a response by hazmat units Sunday.

According to an officer on the scene, the substance may have been an acid. However, he said it has been fully contained without contamination of the sewer system.

As a precaution, emergency crews closed Virginia Gateway Drive by the Hampton Inn Hotel.

As of 12:30 p.m., units were in the process of cleaning up the spill, so crews could reopen the road shortly.
