Incumbents Sweep Prince William GOP Primary

While political pundits often say abbreviated primaries favor the challengers that did not hold true today in Prince William County's Republican Canvass where all the incumbents successfully defended their positions. 

Corey Stewart, Prince William County’s Chairman At-large of the Board of County Supervisors, defeated challenger Chris M. Crawford by a landslide of 4,372 to 1,577 votes. 

Crawford announced his concession just before 7 p.m. on Facebook, when the election appeared close enough to call.

"Congratulations to @CoreyStewartVA on winning the Republican Nomination for Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. Good luck in November!” Crawford wrote.

Meanwhile, Stewart recently posted, "We did it! Thank you all for supporting me as the Republican nominee for Chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. On to November!"

Democrat Richard Smith III plans to run against Stewart in the November general election.

In the Constitutional positions, Sheriff Glen Hill beat Michael Messier, allowing Hill to keep his position as sheriff as he has no Democratic challenger. Hill won by 5,142* votes to Messier's 1,347.

Michele B. McQuigg also successfully won her position as Clerk of the Court, earning her another eight-year term. McQuigg won with 4,579 votes to Austin Haynes' 1,948.

Haynes sent out this message to his supporters via Facebook:

Thanks to everyone who supported me today. Unfortunately, it was not to be. I lost plain and simple. I am happy I ran a clean campaign. I will continue to stay involved and will be looking for to my next Birthday challenge...Remember to wake up happy, go to be happy.

Coles Supervisor Martin "Marty" Nohe defended his seat against Republican opponent Paul O’Meara Jr. Nohe by 923 votes to O'Meara's 637. Nohe faces no Democratic challenger.

And, in Occoquan, Ruth Anderson won the Republican nomination over Don Scoggins (843 to 201) to run in place of Republican Michael May, who is going on to run for Commonwealth Attorney in the fall.

Anderson will still have to run against former Occoquan Mayor, Democrat Earnie Porta in the general election.
