Crash Shuts Down I-66 at Gainesville; Driver in Serious Condition

A car traveling westbound on I-66 near Gainesville crashed and overturned several times, shutting down parts of the interstate Tuesday night.

The Virginia State Police report that the accident occurred at the 42 mile marker at 10:42 p.m.; the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

There were initial reports that the driver was ejected from the car.

"One individual was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries," Virginia State Police Public Relations Director Corinne N. Geller Said.

Fire & Rescue transported another person to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

According to the  Virginia Department of Transportation both sides of the Interstate were shut down to land the Medevac; police diverted westbound I-66 traffic onto exit 44 and eastbound traffic to exit 40.

All lanes were re-opened by 12:25 a.m.
