The Brentsville Town Hall Meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight at Marsteller Middle School has been canceled due to weather and school closings. It will be rescheduled for another date.

ORIGINAL POST, Feb. 19: Brentsville District Supervisor Jeanine Lawson (R) and Brentsville District School Board member, Gil Trenum, will co-host a town hall meeting on Thursday, Feb. 26, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Marsteller Middle School.

The topic of the meeting will be the Fiscal Year 2016 (FY16) budget.

The meeting will include county staff members who will give a presentation on the FY16 budget. After that, citizens will have the opportunities to ask questions of, or provide their comments to Lawson and Trenum.

This meeting follows the preliminary budget presentation by the County Executive at the board requested 1.3 percent increase over this year’s tax bill.

The Town Hall is scheduled to take place before the County Board of Supervisor’s Saturday, Feb. 28 meeting to discuss the budget. This timing allows citizens to have their comments heard by their elected representatives.

Both the school board and the supervisors will have to make budget cuts in order to adopt the budget as it currently stands. Lawson and Trenum want to hear from their constituents which programs they consider essential, and where they believe cuts can be found.

Additionally, citizens can tell their board member if they would rather she vote to adopt the budget as is, or restore funding at the cost raising residential property taxes.

The town hall meeting is great way for the community to dialogue with their representatives.

Masteller Middle School is located at 1400 Sudley Manor Drive in Bristow. All citizens of the Brentsville District are invited.

This is the first town hall meeting for Lawson, who was recently elected to her position in late December.
