UDPATED: NWS Issues Blizzard Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard warning from 1 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Sunday, upgrading the Blizzard Watch from Wednesday.

NWS warns of heavy snow from Friday afternoon until Saturday night, potentially mixing with sleet.

Snow accumulations can exceed 2 feet in some areas.

"Heavy snow and blowing snow will cause dangerous conditions and will be a threat to life and property," a forecaster said. "Travel is expected to be severely limited if not impossible during  the height of the storm Friday night and Saturday."

With wind gusts up to 55 mph, visibility will be reduced to near zero at times in whiteout conditions.

As the region braces for a major winter weather event to arrive this weekend the National Weather Service has issued an Winter Weather Weather Advisory from 6 p.m to midnight Wednesday and a Blizzard Watch for Friday afternoon until late Saturday night.

Bristow weatherman John Biggs calls for 12-24 inches Friday through Saturday.

"There is a high threat for a significant winter storm Friday into Saturday," the NWS said. "Potential impacts include significant travel disruptions due to road and airport closures as well as threats to life and property."

NWS also warns of gale force winds Saturday through Saturday night.

Residents will see a coating an inch Wednesday morning.

The Virginia Department of Health suggests planning ahead prior to the arrival of the storm.

"Have an emergency kit prepared with supplies such as an alternate fuel source for heating your home, flashlights and batteries in your home and car, blankets, food that needs no cooking or refrigeration, a 3 day supply of water, prescription medicines, a battery operated radio and flashlights, battery powered cell phone chargers, snow shovel etc. Learn more about preparing a winter preparedness plan by visiting,www.readyvirginia.gov," VDH posted on their website.
