The National Weather Service has issued a special statement warning residents of severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon. "Thunderstorms are possible this afternoon into this evening," NWS said. "Storms will have the potential to be severe with locally damaging winds and large hail being the primary threats." NWS expects numerous showers and scattered thunderstorms this morning, but the threats for high wind increases this afternoon. "While the Mid-Atlantic is on the stable side of the frontal boundary early this morning, this will change in the later morning hours as the frontal boundary moves northward and instability and winds aloft increase," a forecaster said. The numerous showers throughout the day could also lead to localized flash flooding of creeks and streams; new rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch are possible.

NWS expects drier and cooler conditions for the weekend.
