Prince William County Police deny that a Gainesville child ingested Halloween candy tainted with Anthrax.

The rumor caused a stir on social media on Tuesday, as residents expressed their concern about the incident. However, no one could substantiate that the incident occurred.

"We are working on contacting the source [of the rumor] to have them correct their actions," police spokesman Jonathan Perok said.

The rumor was said to have started in a local parenting group on Facebook.

One individual commented on a local yard sale page that, "They believe it was from the candy but the investigation is still on-going and hasn't been released to the news."

According to Perok, there is no such investigation being conducted.

"[If the incident was true], we would release a press release as usual, utilize social media, and our Crime Prevention Unit would contact the Neighborhood/Community watches in the county," he said.
