PWCS Nixes Suggestion to Extend Winter Break; Hints Longer Break Next Year

Prince William County Schools responded to a group of parents that a modification to the approved School Division calendar allowing two extra days of winter break would not be possible.

Recently, a group started a petition to extend the winter break for students, since they claim there will be extra days available with the elimination of semester exams from the calendar.

"With regrets to those seeking extra days off, the idea will not work. The primary reason is that the elimination of the half-days for exams in no way changed the carefully crafted school calendar—the half days for exams were already counted as required school days," the School Division posted on their website.

According to PWCS, the calendar must be maintained "to meet necessary objectives," such as providing families and teachers with the ability to plan in advance, satisfying the state-mandated number of school days, and building in days for weather-related closings.

They did hint that the 2014-2015 calendar could see a longer winter break.

"The proposed calendar for 2014-15 is being presented to the School Board on Dec. 4. That proposal does include two full weeks for winter Break," they said.

The 2013-2014 winter break extends from Dec. 23 through Jan. 1.
