Service Authority: Fuel Spill Had No Impact on Water Customers

According to the Prince William County Service Authority, there are no lingering effects to residents’ water supply following Thursday night’s spill of 7,500 gallons of fuel near Broad Run.

A spokesman for the company revealed that all samples from water analyses came back negative for traces of fuel from the accident.

“Our lab analyzed drinking water samples collected from taps located near the area of the spill,” PWCSA Communications Director Keenan Howell said. “Chemical components were not detected.”

PWCSA used a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer as well as other systems to analyze water samples.

GC-MS is widely accepted as the industry standard for chemical identification of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in mixtures.

“It is reasonable to conclude that there are no detectable traces of the spill in our system,” Howell said.

At no point did PWCSA feel the need to shut down the system as a precaution.

“There was no impact to customers, no interruption in service,” he said.
