After being stopped for speeding by a Prince William County police officer in the area of Fleetwood Drive and the Fauquier County Line in Nokesville on Oct. 1, James Massey Burns, 56, of Stafford attempted to flee but crossed the divider and hit a 1996 Saturn sedan occupied by a driver and three passengers.

"The officer made contact with the driver, identified as the accused, and upon returning to his police motorcycle, the accused fled at a high rate of speed," said police spokesman Officer Jonathan Perok.

According to the police report, the accused left the scene and continued into Fauquier County where he was stopped by a witness.

"Fauquier County Sheriff deputies and Prince William County police responded to the area and detained the accused who was found to have been driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol," Perok said.

The driver of the Saturn, a 24-year-old woman, and the front seat passenger, a 15-year-old female, sustained non-life threatening injuries. Two children, a four-year-old girl and a three-year-old girl, who were seated in the rear of the Saturn, were also treated for minor injuries. All individuals are from Manassas.

Following an investigation, police arrested Burns, who was charged with one count of DUI, one count of felony hit & run, two counts of DUI maiming, one count of driving without a license and one count of refusing to submit to a breath test.

A court date is unavailable and the accused is being held without bond.
