The Virginia Department of Transportation says it's in it for the long haul as snow removal efforts will continue for days.

"Snow removal and cleanup will continue as long as conditions exist," VDOT said. "Crews in some areas could be working through the end of the week."

Crews continue to work 12-hour shifts to plow and treat all roads.

According to VDOT,  interstates and primaries in northern Virginia are mostly in passable condition, and crews are making significant progress on secondary roads and subdivision streets.

However, increasing traffic as residents return to the roads could hamper clean-up efforts.

"Motorists should continue to limit travel to give crews room for snow removal efforts," VDOT spokesperson Jennifer McCord said. "It slows down the movement of heavy equipment and redeployment of smaller vehicles."

Furthermore, VDOT urges motorists to use extreme caution as even clear pavement is could be slick due to snow melting during the day and refreezing overnight.

As the crews continue to make progress, they warn residents that the sheer amount of snow will continue to hinder driving conditions.

"Due to the massive snowfall, passable secondary and some primary roads may have only one lane, narrow access points, and will not be cleared curb-to-curb," McCord said. "Expect limited visibility from high snow mounds encroaching on merges, intersections, and ramps."
