VDOT PlowsThe Virginia Department of Transportation said residents will face a hazardous commute Tuesday evening as sleet and freezing rain are forecast for the area.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.

"Expect the Tuesday afternoon commute to be long and difficult...with snow, sleet and freezing rain expected to hit northern Virginia right at rush hour, and many drivers expected to leave work or school early," VDOT said. "By noon today, more than 900 trucks will be staged on interstates and major roads in Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties." VDOT said crews pre-treated major roads and trouble spots in northern Virginia yesterday. "On interstates 66, 95, 395, and 495—including bridges and ramps prone to freezing such as the Springfield interchange, I-66 at Route 29 and the Capital Beltway interchange at Route 1—crews use liquid magnesium chloride," they said. "Problem spots on other major roads, such as the Fairfax County Parkway and routes 1, 7, 28, 29, 50 and 123, are pre-treated with brine."
