UPDATED (6:15 P.M.): Severe Weather Expected Saturday

Widespread light to moderate rain will continue throughout Northern Virginia.

The National Weather Service Reports that after a strong cold front, the temperature has dropped more than 20 degrees in the past few hours. Additional rainfall that could accumulate to a tenth of an inch or less is expected through 7 p.m.

Updated Sept. 8, 4:00 p.m.:

The National Weather Service warns of strong to severe thunderstorms, located along a line extending from 18 miles northwest of North Potomac to 12 miles west of Greenwich. The storm is moving east at 35 mph.

"These thunderstorms will cross the western suburbs of the Washington metropolitan area through 4 p.m., reaching the District and I-95 through 4:30 p.m., and then progressing into Prince Georges county through 5 p.m.," the service reports. "Wind gusts are in excess of 5."

NWS warns that these storms are capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and destructive winds in excess of 70 mph.

Residents who face such weather are advised to move indoors to a sturdy building, stay in an interior room on the lowest floor, and stay away from windows.

Updated Sept. 8, 2:30 p.m.:

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Saturday. That agency reports that some storms will produce damaging wind gusts of up to 70 mph; isolated tornadoes are also a possibility.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Saturday afternoon in advance of a cold front that is approaching from the west.

NWS forecasts potentially severe showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. and damaging wind gusts in excess of 70 mph are possible.

The chance of precipitation is 80% and new rainfall could measure  between a quarter and half of an inch.

On Sunday, expect patchy fog before 8 a.m. with sun, and a high near 77 degrees.
