Weekend Beat: Fair, Fun, Politics and Rock!

Posted

Worried that the summer is almost over? Perhaps it is time to make the most of the season. This weekend we have just the events to keep you busy every moment, starting with the Prince William County Fair!

Friday, Aug 9

Friday is a great time for you and your family to preview the fair, take in the sites and the sounds, and plan your second trip.

Like summer, the Prince William County Fair does not last forever, so you need to make the most of it while you can. The Prince William County Fair is held on the Fairground at 10624 Dumfries Road in Manassas and lasts through Aug 18. We recommend it for people of all ages. While the kiddies are sure to love the rides, don’t neglect the rip-roaring entertainment. This year, daily attractions include Deggeller Midway, Carolina Camels, No Joe’s Clown Circus, Pev’s Paintball and Animal and Midway Shows! In addition check out the Truck and Tractor Pull by Interstate/Dragon Motor Sports at 7 p.m. Entrance tickets are $5 for children and seniors, $8 for teens and adults. More info at www. pwcfair.com.

Saturday, Aug 10

Looking forward to Saturday? This Saturday will have you feeling like there is too much to do in the neighborhood from a Sports Symposium to a political rally and alternative rock concert, you can live it up without venturing far from home.

Saturday morning Prince William Youth Sports will hold a Health and Safety Symposium at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at George Mason University Prince William Campus, Verizon Auditorium on 10900 University Blvd in Manassas. Chris Nowinski former pro-wrestler with WWE and President of the Sports Legacy Institute will discuss safety in sports including concussion prevention and management and other policies and procedures to keep young athletes safe on the field, court, ring or pool. Call Prince William Hospital Fitness Center at 703-368-8605 to register or visit www.pwhs.org/symposium online. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be provided as well.

Want to get involved in national politics? Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate is visiting historical Old Town Manassas to hold his "Romney Plan for a Stronger Middle Class" campaign rally at the Harris Pavilion at 4 p.m. as part of his four-state bus tour. Come support his bid for the presidency, or if you are yet undecided, come out and listen to his campaign speech. Be sure to get there early, as there are sure to be crowds. Tickets are free, visit Romney in Manassas at Eventbrite.com for ticket information.

Want more fair time? You got it! Prince William County Fair is still open with the same daily events, and even more attractions on Sat. In fact at 7 p.m., Kokopelli Sound Performance is also sponsoring an Open Mike Night. We suspect it will generate a kind of karoke vibe, making it a fun Saturday night, especially for the over 21 crowd. If you've been practicing your  “Don’t Stop Believing” in the shower, it’s time to take the stage.

Speaking of taking the stage, join the staff of Bristow Beat for the Linkin Park Honda Civic Tour Concert at 8 p.m. at Jiffy Lube Live located at 7800 Cellar Door Dr. off Wellington Rd in Bristow. Linkin Park is that rocking nu metal band has won more alternative music awards than any other this century. While you might remember such hits as “Crawling,” and “Numb,” come check out their diverse repertoire of songs, including everything from metal to rap to pop rock. Tickets range from $30 to $105.20 before taxes and processing fees. Purchase tickets here through ticket master at Livenation.com.

Sunday:

Check out one or both of Bristow’s farmers markets. Smart Markets at Piney Branch Elementary from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. promises the sweetest peaches and plums. Come hungry for barbeque delights or brick oven pizza. Then have dessert too, like dulce de leche cookies, homemade cupcakes or caramel popcorn. Or stop by  Bristow Farmer’s Market on Devlin Road in front of Bristow Montessori School. It is the place for restaurant quality meats, sausages and free-range chickens!

Aug 12 is Armed Forces Appreciation Day at the Prince William Fair. In celebration grandstand fees will be waved all day long. It is an especially musical day at the fair. At 1 p.m. enjoy a bluegrass show, and concerts that continue all day long! At 5 p.m. they will cow case the best cattle in the county.
