The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Monday evening through Tuesday morning.

"Low pressure is now projected to cross the southern Mid-Atlantic Monday night," the weather service said. "Accumulating snow is expected across the area.

At this point, NWS places snow accumulation at 5 or more inches.

"The combination of gusty winds and cold temperatures will continue to make dangerous wind chills that can quickly cause hypothermia and frost bite through Monday morning," NWS said. "Roads will become snow covered and slippery with visibilities being reduced to one half mile or less at times."

The low will exit Tuesday morning, which forecasters say will keep precipitation mainly over the eastern area during the morning hours.

"Northwestern flow on the back side of the low could still result in upsloping snow showers though with minimal moisture," they said. "Not expecting more than a few tenths of an inch during the day Tuesday."

However, experts are concerned about a "very active and brutally cold pattern" that will emerge the second half of the week.

"High temperatures will struggle to get out of the the teens an single digits Thursday and Friday with overnight lows likely dipping to or below zero for most of the area.

John Biggs will have a special edition of Weather Beat Monday.
