The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northern Virginia from 2:55 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., and is forecasting severe weather  from the Southeast to New England, including severe thunderstorms and rain until 9 p.m.

“This is a dangerous storm,” writes the NWS. “If you are in its path, move indoors to a sturdy building and stay away from windows.”

Here in Western Prince William County, residents are already experiencing severe rainstorms that began around 2:40 p.m. The storm includes thunder, lightening, strong winds and even hail.

The storm was detected by the NWS near Warrenton at 2:27 p.m. Friday and was moving east.

“This storm is capable of producing hail up to the size of quarters and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph,” according to the NWS, and “an isolated tornado is also possible.”

Tonight, showers and thunderstorms are likely before 1 a.m. with a slight chance of showers between 1 and 3 a.m. Saturday morning, and rain should continue over the weekend.

The NWS is also warning that localized flash flooding will be possible from Sunday to Tuesday due to repeat showers in the region.
