UPDATED: PWCS Prepares for Potentially Dangerous Weather; Early Dismissals Possible

Posted
ice storm Updated: March 3, 9:30 a.m. Ahead  of a weather advisory calling for a potentially dangerous mix of snow and freezing rain Tuesday afternoon, Prince William County Schools announced they will adjust dismissal times for students if necessary. "PWCS is monitoring the situation and will announce as early as possible any potential changes to afternoon dismissal times and/or cancellation or postponement of afternoon and evening activities, if needed to ensure safety," a spokesperson said. PWCS has also confirmed that the food show scheduled for tonight at Patriot High School has been cancelled and will be rescheduled. Original Story: A Winter Weather Advisory issued for 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 prompted two local school divisions to issue statements about classes tomorrow. The National Weather Service calls for some snow and ice accumulation late morning through the afternoon. According to Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Karen K. Garza, the school division will actively monitor the weather and will send students home early if necessary. "At this time, we anticipate an on-time start for school tomorrow, March 3, 2015, as we strive to resume our regular academic calendar. However, the National Weather Service is forecasting the possibility of freezing rain or sleet for tomorrow and this could result in an early dismissal of classes or the cancellation of after school and/or evening activities in FCPS schools or on school grounds," she said.
Echoing Garza's concern, Fauquier County Public Schools also said they plan to open on time, but would notify parents if an early dismissal is required. NWS warned that during this event, roads will be snow and ice covered and traveling will be dangerous. Bristow Beat will monitor this weather event and post closings and delays here.
