UPDATE: Republicans to Hold Mass Meeting to Select Candidate for Gainesville Supervisor

WOODRIDGE, VA— The mass meeting to select a Republican nominee for the Prince William County Board of Supervisors special election for the Gainesville District., Jan. 2, 2023.  The mass meeting will be at the Park Valley Church, 4500 Waverly Drive, Haymarket, Va. Registration begins at 5  p.m. and the meeting is at 7 p.m. with registration continuing for those in line until all eligible persons inside are registered.  

The Prince William Republican Chairman Denny Daugherty moved the meeting to Jan. 2.  The change became necessary when the Circuit Court issued the writ for the special election on Dec. 27.  State law gives the parties five days after issuing a writ for a special election to certify their nominees. The Republican Committee anticipated this possibility and gave its chairman authority to make any changes needed. The meeting was initially planned for Jan. 4 at Battlefield High School.

All legal and qualified voters of Gainesville Magisterial District of Prince William County, who are in accord with the principles of the Republican Party, and who sign a written promise to support the Republican nominee, may participate in the meeting* (see more info below).

Voters can pre-register at http://www.pwcgop.gop up until 5 p.m. on Dec. 30.  Voters can also register at the meeting by presenting a legal ID. There are no fees to attend the meeting but donations to defray costs are welcome.  

Voting on the nominee will be by secret ballot, with candidates listed on the ballot in an order determined by drawing lots. The lots will be drawn on Dec. 29. With candidate filing not closing until 5 p.m. December 28, the number of candidates to be the Republican nominee is not yet known.

 The Special Election for Gainesville Supervisor is scheduled to be held on Feb. 21, 2023.

UPDATE: Jan. 2, 2023- To be in accord with the principles of the Republican Party, a person otherwise qualified hereunder shall not have participated in Virginia in the nomination process of a party other than the Republican Party within the last five years. A single exception shall be approved for a voter who in writing renounces affiliation with any other party, expresses that he/she is in accord with the principles of the Republican Party and intends, at the time of the writing, to support the nominees of the Republican Party in the future.

Any voter that utilizes the foregoing exception, and thereafter participates in the nomination process of a party other than the Republican Party, shall not have the benefit of this exception thereafter.

Dec. 28, is the last day for Republicans to Register as a Candidate:

Any person who desires to seek the Republican nomination for the Gainesville District Supervisor, Prince William County, Va must submit a written statement to that effect, on a form prescribed by the Chairman, along with a non-refundable filing fee of $1,000 delivered to Wanda Born, Temporary Chair, Nominations Committee, at 15237 Fog Mountain Circle, Haymarket, Va 20169 no later than 5 p.m. on December 28th, 2022. Thus far, Alyson Satterwhite, former Gainesville representative on the Prince William School Board, and Haymarket Councilmember Bob Weir have announced their intent to become the Republican nominee. 

Kerensa Sumers is currently the Democrat's nominee.
