UPDATED: Sept. 30, 3:04 p.m.: Manassas City Police announced that two of the three victims of the shooting at United Rentals in Manassas this morning have passed away from their injuries. The shooting occurred around 7 a.m.
Police identified the deceased victims of Richard Lamont, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33. Their next of kin have been notified. The third victim, an adult male, is now in stable condition.
The Virginia State Police located the man accused of shooting three of his coworkers around 10 a.m. Following a car chase by Virginia State Troopers on Interstate-81, the suspect, Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, N.C., exited his vehicle with a gun aimed at his head.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., the suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Timeline
On Sept. 30 at 7:11 a.m. Manassas City Police received a call about a shooting at United Rentals, located at 9415 Wellington Road.
According to a press release, Manassas City Police Officers and officers from the Prince William Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene at 7:14 a.m. to discover three men suffering from gunshot wounds.
EMTs applied emergency aid to the victims and transported them to an area hospital, where doctors determined all three to be in critical condition.
The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle before police arrived.
The suspect was identified as Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, N.C., an employee of United Rentals, a light-skinned Black male, approximately 5’9”, with brown eyes and brown hair.
He was alleged to have been driving a gray Toyota Camry or Corolla displaying temporary North Carolina registration tags.
Police initiated an active street search, closing Wellington Road between Ashton Avenue and Prince William Street and the ramp from Route 28 to Wellington Road. Schools in that vicinity were placed on lockdown.
After gaining more information about the suspect, detectives pinged Grant’s cell phone, which deterimined that it was in Harrisonburg, Va.
At approximately 8:20 a.m., local police alerted Virginia State Police to be on the lookout for Grant, who officers believed to be in Rockingham County. According to state police, the agency was informed that Grant was driving a silver Toyota Camry with North Carolina license plates.
Around 10 a.m., a Virginia State Police trooper spotted the suspect’s vehicle on Interstate-81 southbound near the 235-mile marker in Augusta County. The suspect’s vehicle pulled into the rest area at the 232-mile marker, where Virginia State Police troopers attempted a traffic stop.
According to state police, the suspect exited his vehicle. He then returned to his vehicle and continued traveling southbound on Interstate-81.
In response, troopers initiated a pursuit.
At the 227-mile marker, the suspect pulled over on the side of the interstate and exited the vehicle with a firearm pointed at his head. The Virginia State Police tactical team and a negotiator were brought to the scene to assist.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., the suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
There was no use of force by the Virginia State Police.
Manassas Police learned that two of the three victims had died in the hospital from their injuries. After notifying their next of kin, Manassas City Police released the names of the individuals, Richard Lamont, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 3.
According to the Manassas Police, the third victim remains hospitalized. He is now in stable condition.
The incident remains under investigation.
