VDOT's Update for Jan. 29: The Department Focuses on Subdivisions

Plus how to follow plows in your district

Posted

Crews continue to work across the district with the main focus on subdivision streets, and cleaning up some of our primary and secondary road turn lanes and intersections. Our crews will continue on 12-hour shifts through the weekend. Be sure to monitor the weather as an additional winter storm is forecast to pass by to our south over southern Virginia and the Carolinas.

What's The Latest

  • A new winter storm is forecast to brush the southern part of NOVA District with major impacts possible for southern Virginia and the Hampton Roads area. If you have travel plans this weekend, be sure to monitor the forecast and check it along the entire route. You can find the forecast for NOVA District here.
  • The main focus on snow operations continues to be on subdivisions needing additional attention. We have assembled teams that have been using specialized equipment such as loaders, skid steers, and tractors to help in our response. Continued very cold overnight temperatures are still forecast into early next week. In some locations we have dropped sand for added traction. There are more than 14,300 lane miles across the NOVA District including almost 17,000 neighborhood streets. Find out if your road is maintained by VDOT here.
  • Stay alert as you travel onto primary roads and interstates. There are some locations where merging will be different from what you are accustomed, or lanes may suddenly drop due to banks of snow. We are working on addressing these but please drive slow and allow extra space between vehicles. If you come across any hazards on the roadway, please report them to 800-FOR-ROAD or my.vdot.virginia.gov.
  • VDOT Northern Virginia crews will continue to progress through our lists of area roads requiring additional attention. Rock salt and abrasives will be used as needed as temperatures, conditions, and roads allow. You can follow plows in the district and see the last six hours of where they've been at plows.vdot.virginia.gov.
  • Stay informed about road conditions by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov, using the free mobile app, or calling 511 from any phone in Virginia. If you plan to travel, check the forecast for your whole trip as weather and road conditions can vary across the state.
