Traffic changes on I-66 will take effect during daytime and overnight hours

What’s Happening

The 66 Express Lanes are now open for travel, but construction continues throughout the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project corridor during daytime and overnight hours as weather conditions allow.

Significant Upcoming Traffic Impacts

  • Multi-week temporary turn lane closures at the University Boulevard and Wellington Road intersection in Gainesville for intersection spot improvements will continue through May 19. Details
  • Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: Route 29 (Lee Highway) Centreville, Route 28, Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway), Route 50, and I-495. Details

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / GAINESVILLE

Route 29 (Lee Highway) North and South Gainesville from I-66 to University Boulevard

Monday, May 15, through Friday, May 19: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One lane will be closed daily for road widening. 

University Boulevard East and West from I-66 to Route 29 Gainesville

Monday, May 15, through Friday, May 19: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

One lane will be closed daily for road widening. 

                                                               

66 Express Lanes East from Route 29 Gainesville to Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway) 

Wednesday, May 17: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The express lanes will be closed for overhead bridge and sign work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Left Turn Lane from Wellington Road West to University Boulevard South

Continuously through 5 p.m. Friday, May 19

The left turn lane will be closed for roadway widening and intersection improvements. Travel lanes on Wellington Road West approaching University Boulevard will be shifted to maintain one left turn lane, one thru lane, and one thru/right turn lane during this period.

Right Turn Lane from University Boulevard North to Wellington Road East

Continuously through 5 p.m. Friday, May 19

The right turn lane will be closed for roadway widening and intersection improvements. Travel lanes on University Boulevard North approaching Wellington Road will be shifted to maintain one left turn lane and one thru/right turn lane. 

ROUTE 234 BUSINESS (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS

Left Turn Lane from Route 234 Business (Sudley Road) South to Balls Ford Road East

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, May 12, continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, May 15 

The left turn lane will be closed for intersection improvements. Drivers will be directed farther south, stay to the left and use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn at Coverstone Drive/Williamson Boulevard, then stay to the right and turn right onto Balls Ford Road East.

Ramp from 66 Express Lanes West to Route 234 Business

Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed both nights for bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramp from Route 234 Business to 66 Express Lanes East 

Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed both nights for bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

66 Express Lanes East from Route 29 (Lee Highway) Gainesville to Route 234 Bypass (Prince William Parkway)

Wednesday, May 17: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The express lanes will be closed for overhead bridge and sign work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

ROUTE 29 (LEE HIGHWAY) / CENTREVILLE

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North and South Centreville

Tuesday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp will be closed for paving. Traffic will be detoured prior to the closure to Route 28 South, then follow signs to Route 29 North or South. Note: This closure will not be implemented when the detour conflicts with other closures. 

Ramp from Route 29 North Centreville to I-66 West 

Tuesday, May 16: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for paving. Traffic will be directed to continue farther north to the intersection of Machen Road/Trinity Parkway. At the traffic signal drivers will use the left-most left turn lane to make a U-turn onto Route 29 South, then stay to the right and follow signs to I-66 West. Note: This closure will not be implemented when the detour conflicts with other closures.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 28 North

Ramp from I-66 West to Braddock Road/Walney Road

Sunday, May 14: 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. (Monday, May 15, will be used as backup)

The ramps will be closed for paving. Traffic will be detoured to Route 28 South, to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North, stay to the right and follow signs to Route 28 North. Drivers heading to Braddock Road/Walney Road will stay left and follow signs to the exit on the left. Note: This closure will not be implemented when the detour conflicts with other closures.

Ramp from I-66 West to Braddock Road/Walney Road

Tuesday, May 16, through Thursday, May 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed each night for paving and overhead bridge work. Traffic will be directed to Route 28 North, travel to the Westfields Boulevard Interchange. Drivers heading to Braddock Road will take the exit to Westfields Boulevard West, then continue to Braddock Road. Drivers traveling to Walney Road will take the exit to Westfields Boulevard East, then turn right onto Walney Road. 

Ramp from I-66 East to Route 28 North and Braddock Road/Walney Road 

Tuesday, May 16, through Friday, May 19: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp will be closed each night for paving. Traffic will be detoured farther east to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 28 North. 

Ramp from Route 28 North to Braddock Road/Walney Road

Sunday, May 14, through Thursday, May 18: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed nightly for paving and drainage work. Traffic will be directed to continue farther north to the Westfields Boulevard Interchange. Drivers traveling to Braddock Road will take the exit to Westfields Boulevard West, then continue to Braddock Road. Drivers traveling to Walney Road will take the exit to Westfields Boulevard East, then turn right onto Walney Road. 

Ramp from Route 28 South and Braddock Road/Walney Road to the 66 Express Lanes West 

Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed both nights for a concrete pour. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramp from the 66 Express Lanes West to Route 28 North and Braddock Road/Walney Road 

Tuesday, May 16, and Wednesday, May 17: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp will be closed both nights for overhead bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramp from Stringfellow Road to the 66 Express Lanes East

Tuesday, May 16; Friday, May 19; and Saturday, May 20: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed each night for overhead sign work and noise wall installation. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramp from I-66 East to the 66 Express Lanes East at Route 28 North

Thursday, May 18, and Friday, May 19: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed both nights for paving. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramp from the 66 Express Lanes West to Stringfellow Road 

Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20 

The ramp will be closed both nights for noise wall installation. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

I-66 East from Stringfellow Road to Route 286 

Sunday, May 14: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work. 

I-66 East at Route 28 

Monday, May 15; Wednesday, May 17; and Thursday, May 18: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Two lanes will be closed each night for overhead sign and bridge work. 

Route 28 South under Braddock Road/Walney Road Bridge

Monday, May 15, through Friday, May 19: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed nightly for overhead bridge work. 

Braddock Road/Walney Road between Cabells Mill Drive and Newton Patent Drive 

Tuesday, May 16, and Wednesday, May 17: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The road will be closed both nights for paving. 

I-66 West at Stringfellow Road 

Monday, May 15: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed for utility work. 

I-66 East at Stringfellow Road 

Friday, May 19: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed for overhead bridge work and painting. 

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY) / FAIR LAKES

Ramps from I-66 East to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) North and South and part of the I-66 East collector-distributor lane 

Sunday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 17, through Friday, May 19: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

A portion of the I-66 East collector-distributor lane and the ramps will be closed each night for paving, restriping, barrier removal, and guardrail installation. Traffic will be directed to continue farther east to Route 50 West, stay to the right to I-66 West, then follow signs to Route 286 North or South. 

Ramps from 66 Express Lanes East to Route 286 North and South 

Sunday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 17, through Friday, May 19: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed each night for restriping and pavement preparation. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramps from Route 286 North and South to I-66 East

Sunday, May 14, and Wednesday, May 17, through Friday, May 19: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramps will be closed each night for restriping and pavement preparation. Route 286 North traffic will be directed to continue north past I-66, exit to Route 50 East, travel about two miles and follow signs to I-66 East. Route 286 South traffic will be directed to exit to Route 50 East prior to the closure, then follow signs to I-66 East.

Ramp from Route 286 South to I-66 East 

Friday, May 19: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for paving. Traffic will be directed farther south to Route 29 (Lee Highway) North, turn left at the second traffic signal, and follow signs to Route 286 North, then exit to I-66 East. 

I-66 East to Route 286 South 

Tuesday, May 16: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for paving and restriping. Traffic will be directed to Route 286 North, stay right to the ramp to I-66 West, then stay right to Route 286 South.

Ramp from Stringfellow Road to the 66 Express Lanes East

Tuesday, May 16; Friday, May 19; and Saturday, May 20: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed each night for overhead sign work and noise wall installation. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramp from Monument Drive to the 66 Express Lanes East 

Tuesday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for overhead sign work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramp from the 66 Express Lanes West to Stringfellow Road 

Friday, May 19, and Saturday, May 20: 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The ramp will be closed both nights for noise wall installation. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Sunday, May 14, and Monday, May 15: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed both nights for overhead bridge work and paving.

Route 286 North and South under I-66

Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed both nights for inspections. 

I-66 West at Stringfellow Road 

Monday, May 15: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp will be closed both nights for paving. Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) South, stay to the right to I-66 East, then follow signs for Route 50 East.

Ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 West

Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp will be closed both nights for paving. Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 608 (West Ox Road) South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 East

Wednesday, May 17, through Friday, May 19: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The ramp will be closed each night for paving. Traffic will be directed to continue farther west to Route 608 South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 East.

Ramp from Monument Drive to the 66 Express Lanes East 

Tuesday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for overhead sign work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

The ramp will be closed each night for overheard sign work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

66 Express Lanes East from Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) to I-495 (the end of the express lanes)

The lanes will be closed each night for utility installation. Traffic will be directed to exit the express lanes at Route 123, turn right at the traffic signal onto Route 123 South, then stay to the right to access the I-66 East general-purpose lanes.

The ramp will be closed for overhead sign installation. Traffic will be detoured farther south to the exit to Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) East, stay to the right to Fairview Park, take the left fork to Fairview Park North, bear left at the traffic signal, stay to the right following signs to I-495 North and I-66, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Ramp from I-495 South to the 66 Express Lanes West 

Tuesday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed for repair work and inspection. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

Ramp from Gallows Road to the 495 Express Lanes North 

Wednesday, May 17, through Saturday, May 20: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The ramp will be closed each night for overheard sign work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

495 Express Lanes North from Robinson Terminal (the beginning of the express lanes) to I-66 

Monday, May 15, and Tuesday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The road will be closed both nights for overhead bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

495 Express Lanes North from Route 50 to Route 29 (Lee Highway)

Wednesday, May 17, through Saturday, May 20: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The lanes will be closed each night for overhead bridge work. Overhead signs will direct drivers to alternate routes.

I-66 West at I-495 

Tuesday, May 16: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed for utility installation. 

66 Express Lanes West at I-495 (the beginning of the Express Lanes) 

Wednesday, May 17: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

The entrance to the express lanes will be closed for overhead lighting work. 

I-495 North at I-66 

Wednesday, May 17, through Friday, May 19: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Two lanes will be closed each night for overhead bridge work. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages during the overnight hours.
