Patriot High School in Nokesville announced Thursday that assistant principal David Van Gelder is assuming the position of acting school principal effective immediately as Dr. Michael Bishop is on leave.
In a Jan. 9 electronic notification to Patriot parents, Van Gelder explained he cannot disclose the reason for Bishop's leave as it is an employee matter.
Van Gelder assured parents their children were in "a safe, supportive, and high-quality environment."
Dear Patriot High School Families,
I am writing to inform you that our principal, Dr. Bishop, is currently on leave. As one of the assistant principals, I will be stepping in as the acting principal of Patriot High School during Dr. Bishop’s absence.
While I cannot share information regarding any employee’s leave, be assured our teachers and staff will continue to provide a safe, supportive, and high-quality learning environment for all students. Thank you for your continued support of Patriot High School.

David Van Gelder was promoted to Assistant Principal at Patriot High School in June 2019, after serving as an administrative intern at the school from 2018-19.
Van Gelder served as band director from the school's opening in 2011 until 2018. He has a bachelor's and master's degree in music education from Ithaca College. He earned his master's certification in educational leadership and administration from George Washington University.
