Fairfax County Police (McLean District) – Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a missing Prince William County man in Tysons.

Friday, June 6 at 11:16 p.m., FCPD officers and the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded to Galleria Drive and Tysons Boulevard for a 911 activation call from an iPhone. Upon arriving at the scene, officers located an unoccupied 2019 blue Toyota Yaris in the tree line near the roadway.

The crash investigation revealed that the 2019 Toyota Yaris was traveling westbound on Galleria Drive, crossed into the eastbound lanes, left the roadway onto the grass, and struck a tree. Witnesses on the scene stated they saw an individual flee from the vehicle and may have left the scene in another vehicle immediately following the crash.

Officers searched the vehicle and the surrounding area and did not locate any occupants involved in the crash or any evidence of foul play. The Fire and Rescue Department utilized thermal imaging technology in the area for any involved persons, which yielded no results.

Saturday afternoon, June 7, the day after the crash, the Prince William County Police Department [PWCPD] received a missing person’s report for Kyle Coleman, 19, of Gainesville. Sunday, June 8, after receiving a video depicting Coleman before the crash, PWCPD upgraded the case to Critically Endangered Missing.

Monday, June 9, PWCPD disseminated Coleman’s missing person’s bulletin. Within minutes of receiving this bulletin, FCPD detectives linked the June 6 crash to Coleman and contacted PWCPD to coordinate and assist in the investigation.

Detectives immediately began pursuing all leads, including checking area hospitals and jails, FLOCK license plate readers and utilizing K9 to search the surrounding area. The initial day’s search did not yield any results.

Continuing into Tuesday, June 10, FCPD deployed resources in and around the area to include Fairfax County's Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) to coordinate technology-based investigative efforts; its Tysons Urban Team to conduct ground-level canvassing of urban areas; a Search and Rescue Team to conduct detailed grid searches on foot through nearby wooded areas and open spaces; a Drone Unit to conduct an aerial search and provide real-time aerial imagery to ground teams, and its Underwater Search and Recovery Unit to search nearby retention ponds and water features.

While conducting this search, our Underwater Search and Recovery Unit was able to eventually locate Coleman deceased, submerged in a nearby retention pond surrounded by thick brush. Through the review of subsequent surveillance footage depicting Coleman leaving the crash scene, detectives were able to confirm that no one else was involved in the crash.
